Information on Towns in the Costa del Sol

ALORA

Alora belongs to the municipality of El Valle del Guadalhorce.  It is located on top of a hill on the river Guadalhorce.  On the mountain side to the west - the Cordillera Antequerana -  the landscape is spectacular.  The mountain Serrania de Ronda, provides a landscape of pinegroves.  On the East side of the river Guadalhorce, the landscape is soft, with small hills of cereals, some olive trees and remains of oaks.  The natural landscape spreads through the province from Periana up to Alora, separating the mountain Cordillera Antequerana from the Mounts of Malaga.  These mounts also stand out in Alora, along with fruit and vegetable gardens and orange trees.

If you are looking for a different, more peaceful, way of life, then this could be an area of interest to you.  Properties here will be less expensive than on the coast. and it is still only about 40 minutes drive to Malaga.

BENALMADENA COSTA / PUEBLO

Located west of Malaga and Torremolinos, Benalmadena is a great, lively, family resort.  Packed full of activities for adults and children.

  • A beautifully designed marina – a meeting place for many both winter and summer, with great bars, restaurants, shops and amusements for the kids.

  • Tivoli Fairground Park – where both adults and children can both have a great day enjoying the rides, the water and the sun

  • Fantastic beaches with water sports for the more active or just a soft sun bed for those looking to relax and enjoy the sun

  • Casino for those feeling lucky

  • An abundance of Bars and Restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets

  • Properties to suit all budgets – apartments, townhouses, villas – either in the heart of the town, on a golf course or in one of the, outlying, residential, urbanisations, for which Benalmadena Costa has many.  Brand new properties to ones in need of modernisation – you can choose.

The Pueblo is located in an elevated position just a 5 minute drive from the coast of Benalmadena and 15 minutes from the Coastal Resort. It is a beautiful white washed village with stunning views of the Mediterranean.  Life here is a little quieter but it is still a bustling year round village.

If you buy a property in Benalmadena, you will be within easy reach of major towns such as:  Torremolinos, Fuengirola and Malaga as well as an abundance of Golf Courses.  Many UK residents own properties and businesses in this area.

CARTAMA

Cartama is located in the Valley of the Guadalhorce, at the foot of two mountains: Espartales and Llana, which make up the mountain know by Cartama.  It is better known as El Valle del Limon (the Valley of the Lemon).  Hillsides and mountains form a natural ideal place to practise various outdoor sports.  Its wealth, and historical patrimony make it one of the most important regions in Guadalhorce.  The archaeological deposits found in Cartama are regarded as some of the largest in the province.  These include fragments of ceramics, walls, metal pieces, coins and Roman columns.

Its easy access to Malaga – about a 20 minute drive – make this a desirable inland location and properties here are cheaper than the coast.  There are quite a lot of new developments in the Cartama area.

COIN

Coin can be found approximately 40 minutes drive inland, between Marbella and Malaga.  The trade of citrus fruits is very important in Coin, as the quality of oranges, lemons and mandarins is excellent.  The village itself can offer you shops, bars, restaurants, schools and medical centres to meet most of your needs.  Those it does not meet are a short car journey away.

There is a lot of new development in this area – apartments, townhouses and villas.  Detached properties can be bought on large plots of land (often containing fruit trees) for a reasonable cost.  Many of these properties will be old and may need some modernisation.  These types of properties are not usually very large built sizes, and it is very hard to get permission to extend them in anyway.  Make sure you find out all the legalities before proceeding with a purchase.

Many UK residents are starting to buy propeties and businesses in this area.

ESTEPONA

The town is not only devoted to tourism, fishing is practised and citrus fruits are grown, with a good annual production.  Estepona is a medium sized and relatively unspoilt town and probably one of the coast’s most ‘Spanish’ tourist resorts.  It is becoming a fast developing area on the Costa del Sol – with many new developments and golf courses in the process of being built.  Prices here are lower than the more established towns on the coast, where most expats live, and it is only about 20-30 minutes drive from Marbella.  This is not your typical British package tour place.

FUENGIROLA

A well established tourism town approximately 30minutes drive from Malaga Airport in one direction and 30 minutes from Marbella in the other.  Fuengirola is a large, bustling, town with great bars, restaurants, shops and a huge market on Tuesdays.  It also has miles of beautiful beaches and a  water park for a great day out.   It has a large train and bus station to help you get out and visit other towns in the region.

The heart of Fuengirola is very busy and not for those looking for a quiet life., but just a short distance along the coast into one of its suburbs such as Los Boliches or Torreblanca brings you a little more peace – yet still plenty of life both winter and summer.

Most properties within the coastal area of Fuengirola and its suburbs are older.  There are, however, some new developments a little further back from the beach but most are not within walking distance of amenities.  Prices in the Hills of Torreblanca are quite reasonable.  Frontline properties are very expensive no matter what their age.

Many UK residents have homes in this area and there are also many business owners here.

MALAGA

Malaga, capital of Costa del Sol, is nowadays a modern city.  Malaga province is one of the main tourist resorts in Europe but the city itself is one of the most under-rated in Spain.  It is a diverse city full of culture, history and traditions.  Picasso was born here in 1881 and you can still visit the house he lived in during his first years.  There is much to see and do in Malaga City and many reasons to visit – fantastic shops, historical sites, sitting right beside the Mediterranean, amazing restaurants and cheap flights from the UK.  For these reasons, it is fast becoming a top destination for short breaks in both winter and summer thus making it an up and coming area for investing in property.

MARBELLA

Marbella and its famous harbour, Puerto Banus, is one of the most fashionable areas.  Visited by the rich and famous, its famed coastal ‘golden mile’ contains some of the most expensive real estate in Europe.  If you want to shop here, take lots of money – most of the shops are designer brands.  Marbella is a city desired by all, supported by investments, with golf courses, new avenues, parks and awarded at both national and international level for its safety and cleanliness.

Property here is normally built to very high standards – and the prices reflect this.  You will get less property for your money, but the lifestyle is exquisite.  If you can afford it, this is the place to be – both for properties and businesses.

MIJAS PUEBLO / COSTA

Mijas Pueblo is located just a 15 minute drive inland from Fuengirola,  in the west of the Costa del Sol.  It is a beautiful, white wash, mountainside village with a labyrinth of hills and the villas with ornamental plants along the way.  The mountain offers panoramic views over Fuengirola and the sea.  A truly stunning location.  Mijas is an ideal place to go shopping for ‘souvenirs’ from Costa del Sol.  The popular crafts stand out.  Property in this area can be quite expensive, as it is a most desirable place to live.  There are some super villas in Mijas with unsurpassable views of the coast.

Mijas Costa runs along the coast from the west end of Fuengirola to Riviera del Sol, incorporating places such as:  El Faro, El Chapparel, La Cala de Mijas and Torrenueva.  Along this coast you have a big choice in types of properties and budgets.  For instance, properties in El Faro are, on the whole, less expensive than properties in La Cala de Mijas.  The reason for this being, that La Cala de Mijas is a coastal village directly on the beach.  The whole village is flat and offers many shops, bars and restaurants.  It is very sought after for its location to the beach and ease on foot.  El Faro, on the other hand, is set back from the main coast road.  It is slightly hilly and does not have the heart of a village.  If you are happy to be within driving distance or shops, rather than walking distance, then El Faro would not be a problem.   Riviera del Sol is quite a modern resort.  It is set on a hillside and  has a few shops, bars and restaurants.  It is close to the beach and has a very open feel to it.  Properties here are, on the whole, quite reasonably priced.

There are many golf courses within this area and if you are looking for a golf course property, you should get quite a lot of choice here.

TORREMOLINOS

One of the first major tourist resorts of the area, this town offers great shopping opportunities and an abundance of bars and restaurants.  It is especially around the neighbourhoods of El Bajondillo and La Carihuela, that the tourist industry has developed, due to their exceptional beaches, which are known throughout the world.  There is a great water park which attracts many visitors from surrounding towns and villages.  It is also a gay friendly town and attracts visitors of the gay population from across the world.  It has a large gay community.

Torremolinos is not an expanding town nowadays although there are a few new developments on offer.  It can offer you apartments, townhouses and villas to suit your budget, but there is not as much on offer as other areas of the coast.
